The fight was expected to take place in Chicago
Previously targeted for March 28th at Chicago’s Wintrust Arena, Gennadiy Golovkin’s mandatory IBF title defense against Kamil Szeremeta is now “likely” to take place in April. ESPN’s Steve Kim further reports that Vergil Ortiz will take the date for a bout in Inglewood, which could compete with Artur Beterbiev-Meng Fanlong.
There’s no word yet as to whether the location will change; as mentioned before, Eddie Hearn had discussed putting the vacant WBO title fight between Krzysztof Glowacki and Lawrence Okolie on the card for the Polish connection. The idea still seems sound.
We’ve discussed Golovkin (40-1-1, 35 KO) vs. Szeremeta (21-0, 5 KO) an ostensible mismatch that gained some intrigue after “GGG’s” rough outing against Sergiy Derevyanchenko last October, so let’s talk Ortiz (15-0, 15 KO). The 21-year-old went 4-0 with four knockouts in 2019, handing the ever-durable Mauricio Herrera his first stoppage loss and battering Antonio Orozco in an ostensible step up. His efforts earned him top-10 rankings in the WBO and WBC, plus the WBA “gold” title, so he has plenty of potential options for an opponent. You all got anyone in mind?
