Dana Whites Contender Series 89 results: Historic upset leads contract winners

MMA Junkie had you covered with live results and round-by-round updates of Dana White’s Contender Series 89, which took place Tuesday at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas and streamed on Paramount+.

Dana White's Contender Series fight cards see prospects compete in hopes of earning a UFC contract, with UFC president Dana White on hand to make the decision.

The third week of the 10th season saw 10 fighters compete for their shots at a UFC contract. In the featured bout, the daughter of former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir, Bella Mir (4-1), took on Alex Apodaca (4-1) in a women's bantamweight bout.

Mir gets right into it with a 1-2, and looks to get a hold of Apodaca, but is quickly shrugged off. Apodaca continues to control the center. Apodaca lands a hard front kick as Mir looks to shoot in for a takedown. Mir keeps a hold of the leg, though, and they go to the mat. Apodaca floats well over the top, and punches the body. Mir keeps a hold of the leg, but Apodaca is firmly on top, nearly able to take the back. Mir finally gives up on it, and they're back to standing. Apodaca offers a high kick. They exchange punches. Apodaca steps in with a punch followed by a kick, which Mir grabs, and looks for the takedown. Apodaca nearly reverses again, but Mir scrambles to a back take – although it's not fully secure. They both take a breather in this position, with Apodaca on both knees. Mir works to secure the position and threatens a choke with less than a minute to go. Apodaca sneaks in a nice short elbow and a couple of hammerfists from an awkwardly tangled position before the horn. We go to the scorecards for the first and only time tonight.

Alex Apodaca vs. Bella Mir: Round 2

They touch gloves and Apodaca stalks forward. A pair of kicks are offered from Apodaca. Mir shoots in and gets stuffed very nicely by Apodaca. There's Apodaca with a nice punch. Mir looks for a two-punch combo. Apodaca closes in with punches, and is met with a nice counter combo by Mir. Apodaca resets. Apodaca with a front kick now. Mir charges forward and lands a nice right hand. Apodaca steps in, looking to land a right as well. Apodaca goes back to the front kicks. Mir lands a solid left hand. More front kicks from Apodaca as she pressures Mir along the fence. There's a clean right hand from Apodaca as Mir looks to kick the body. Apodaca lands another front kick. Blood is trickling from Mir's nose now. Apodaca keeps coming forward with strikes, keeping Mir on the back foot.

Alex Apodaca vs. Bella Mir: Round 1

The feature bout is upon us, a women's bantamweight bout between Alex Apodaca and Bella Mir.

They meet in the center, and Mir sits on a stiff left hand. Apodaca fires back, and they trade punches in the center. Apodaca controls from the center as Mir works from the outside. There's a 1-2 offering from Mir. Apodaca goes for a kick, but gets it caught. Mir gets the standing back take and is working to get the fight to the mat. Apodaca keeps things standing, and they separate, resetting to the middle. Apodaca offers a front kick. Mir comes forward with a nice 1-2. Mir steps back, and comes right back in with a three-punch combo. They clinch up, and Mir nearly gets a takedown, but Apodaca defends well, and ends up in control of the clinch against the fence. Apodaca works her kicking game, repeatedly going to the body with fronts and roundhouses. Mir catches one with just under a minute left. Mir gets the takedown and quickly gets on the back. Apodaca stays calm and reverses position, raining in punches until the horn sounds.

Up next, we have heavyweights.

Uriel reaches out for the glove touch, and Piazzon immediately shoots in for a takedown. Uriel stays upright as he holds onto a guillotine attempt against the cage. He's using it to maintain position, but oh! Now he's cranking on it! He turns Piazzon around and now he's REALLY cranking on this! It's over! WOW!!! The standing guillotine gets it done!

Clancy Jr. comes forward, pressuring Balletto near the cage. Clancy Jr. shoots in and gets a nice takedown, landing in the center of the cage. Balletto holds on to the neck for a guillotine counter, and Clancy Jr. appears to look for the Von Flue, but Balletto sees it, and gets his arm free. Clancy Jr. steps over, passing into full mount. Clancy Jr. drills home a few hard elbows. Balletto nearly gives up his back, and Clancy Jr. quickly slaps on a choke. It's not there, and he's back to full mount. Clancy Jr. looks for more elbows from the top while Balletto keeps covered up. Clancy Jr. opts to rain down a few quick punches. Now it's elbows. It's getting ugly quickly! There it is! The ref has seen enough and calls a stop to this onslaught. Very nice work from Clancy Jr.!

Gary Balletto vs. Sean Clancy Jr.: Round 1

Up onext is a welterweight bout between Gary Balletto and Sean Clancy Jr.

They meet in the center and begin feeling out the range. Clancy Jr. goes for a hard kick to the body as Balletto counters with a right hand. Balletto darts forward with a punch, and Clancy Jr. comes back with another body kick. Clancy Jr. goes high with a kick as Balletto once again sends in a right hand at the same time. Balletto darts forward and gets tagged with a check left hook. Clancy Jr. steps in with a knee. There's a nice question mark kick, too. Clancy Jr. goes for a front kick, followed by a calf kick. Big swing and a miss with a right hand from Clancy Jr. Balletto lands a quick right counter. Clancy Jr. adds a hard calf kick. Another front kick from Clancy Jr. They exchange punches in the center. Clancy Jr. charges forward with a jumping kick. Balletto darts with a punch.

Up next is a welterweight bout between Ronald Humphrey and Alexis Miranda.

They get right into it trading punches. Humphrey changes levels for a big lift and slam to the canvas, and he's punching away as Miranda tries to work to his feet. Miranda gets up, but Humphrey is attached to the hips. Humphrey looks for a knee on the exit. Miranda blocks a head kick and returns a nice punch to the body. Humphrey lands a nice punch of his own. Miranda goes back to the body very nicely. Humphrey shoots in and completes another takedown. Miranda gets up, but is returned to the mat. Humphrey lands punches as Miranda gets up. They separate and Miranda throws his hands up in a taunt with a big smile before ripping a combination. Humphrey stays defensively sound and drops Miranda! Humphrey doesn't rush, and Miranda gets up, now bleeding from his forehead. Humphrey gets another takedown, and drilling home more punches. Miranda is back to his feet again, but is returned to the mat again. Now Humphrey takes the back and threatens a choke. It's not there, and now Humphrey is raining down punches as blood paints the canvas. Back on the back now, and there's the choke. Oh, this one is in deep! There's the tap! Dana White is on his feet for that finish.

Kicking off this week's action is a middleweight bout between Nick Galanti and Carlos Petruzzella.

A glove touch gets this one started, and the feel-out process begins. Galanti opens with a head kick. Petruzzella fires a kick in return, and Galanti closes the distance with a takedown threat. The clinch is on. Galanti frames, and BANG!!! Galanti absolutely rocks Petruzzella with a hard right hand! Down he goes! Galanti follows up with punches on the ground, and that's it! WOW!
