Sean Sharaf shocks Olympic champ Gable Steveson with brutal 12-second KO in historic UFC 331 upset

Gable Steveson did indeed shock the world. Just not in the way he would’ve preferred.

The Olympic champion suffered a stunning and brutal 12-second knockout loss at the hands of retired U.S. Marine Sean Sharaf on Saturday night at UFC 331.

Sharaf (4-2) entered the bout as more than a 10-to-1 underdog on several sportsbooks, and was winless in his previous two Octagon appearances. Steveson (4-1), on the other hand, has generally been hailed as the most talented heavyweight prospect in recent MMA history, and was listed a high as a -1600 betting favorite prior to Saturday’s bout.

Yet one picture-perfect left hand was all Sharaf needed to author the upset of a lifetime.

“I’m not surprised, motherf***ers,” an elated Sharaf said post-fight, channeling Nate Diaz’s infamous post-fight interview following his 2016 upset win over Conor McGregor.

“I feel amazing. I worked so hard, I prayed so hard. I believed in myself when nobody believed in me. And I want to thank you all for your support and your energy.”

The shocking result marked the third-fastest finish in UFC heavyweight history.

Stevenson left the cage under his own power prior to the result’s official announcement.

The hype behind Steveson existed for a reason. The 26-year-old was one of the most accomplished amateur wrestling talents of his era. Along with being a two-time NCAA Division I national champion and two-time Dan Hodge Trophy winner — the award given annually to collegiate athletics' top freestyle wrestler — he is best known for his run through the 2020 Olympic Games, where he stunned the global field at just 21 years old to become the youngest freestyle wrestler ever in his division to win gold.

Over the past year, Steveson appeared to emerge as a rare blue-chip MMA heavyweight prospect. Entering Saturday’s sophomore UFC appearance, he was already 5-0 with five first-round knockout wins across multiple combat sports disciplines, culminating in a two-minute thrashing of Elisha Ellison this past July in his Octagon debut.

As it turned out, he did not fare nearly as well in UFC fight No. 2.
