Eddie Hearn releases statement after Tom Aspinall vacates UFC title

Tom Aspinall chose to vacate his UFC heavyweight title earlier today. The news caused discussion among fans, and his new manager, Eddie Hearn, has shared some insight into the decision.

The 33-year-old was met with backlash from viewers after he refused to continue following an eye poke during his heavyweight clash against Ciryl Gane. The incident didn’t look too serious, and many believed he took the easy way out. But that clearly wasn’t the case. Since that night almost a year ago, Aspinall has had several surgeries, and despite pushing toward a return, a separate event then caused damage to his right eye.

Tom Aspinall released his own statement, telling fans he will return once he is healthy. Promoter Eddie Hearn also shared his own views. Praising Aspinall for showing class in the face of adversity, Hearn endorsed the UFC star and promised his comeback once he is able, saying:

“This has been an incredibly challenging time for Tom. But he has shown his total class throughout. Everyone at Matchroom is with him every step of the way. We are confident that he will succeed in his ultimate goal to return to the Octagon and reclaim the title that is rightfully his.”

Tom Aspinall vacated his title on the back of Dana White‘s comments. While speaking to the media, White was questioned about Aspinall and his inactivity.

Aspinall found himself in a similar position to Valentina Shevchenko, whose injury would keep her out for an extended time. Shevchenko decided to abandon her championship status, allowing others to fight for the belt until she recovers.

Liking the idea, White told the media that conversations would be had with the Brit regarding his future in the UFC and his standing as champion. Those discussions appear to have taken place, resulting in Aspinall renouncing his title.
