Cris Cyborg Proves She Still Belongs in the Cage at 41, Walking Back Retirement

Cris Cyborg has officially walked back the idea of retirement from mixed martial arts, confirming that she intends to compete again after what was billed as her final fight under the Professional Fighters League banner.

The 41-year-old Brazilian MMA legend revealed the change in plans during a recent interview with MMA Sucka, ending weeks of uncertainty surrounding her future. Cyborg made it clear that her victory over former ranked UFC bantamweight Ketlen Vieira at PFL Tampa did not mark the end of her MMA career.

“Yes, I will fight MMA again,” she stated.

Cyborg’s Short-Lived Retirement

The announcement comes less than two months after PFL officially promoted Cyborg’s August fight against Vieira as her retirement bout. Rather than viewing the fight as confirmation that it was time to walk away, she now sees it as evidence that she can remain competitive against elite opposition.

“I think my performance against Ketlen Vieira proved I am still able to compete against the very best in the sport,” Cyborg told MMA Sucka.

Cyborg entered PFL Tampa on Aug. 22 with the opportunity to close out her PFL tenure by defending the women’s featherweight championship and reaching 30 professional MMA victories.

She accomplished both goals, defeating Vieira by unanimous decision, improving her professional MMA record to 30-2, and extending one of the most accomplished careers in women’s MMA history.

The win was particularly notable because Vieira missed the featherweight limit by more than seven pounds, leaving Cyborg to defend her championship against a significantly heavier opponent.

PFL had originally described the matchup as Cyborg’s final MMA fight when it announced the event in June. After defeating Vieira, however, Cyborg left the door open to continuing her career, explaining that she wanted to take some time before deciding what came next.

“I don’t know if I’m going to fight again, but I wanted to be a champion one more time and get my 30th victory,” Cyborg said immediately after the fight.

Cyborg Has Several Options to Fight

The timing of Cyborg’s decision is significant because her PFL contract concluded with the Vieira fight. That leaves the veteran free to explore opportunities elsewhere as the PFL and Most Valuable Promotions move forward with their newly announced merger.

Her impressive legacy would make her a marquee signing for any MMA promotion, and she is still fully confident in her abilities despite her age.

One possibility is a reunion with Scott Coker, who previously worked with Cyborg during her Strikeforce and Bellator runs. Cyborg attended the launch of Coker’s new Ki MMA promotion in September, although her presence at the event did not confirm that she was planning to compete for the organization.

A return to the UFC has also remained a subject of speculation, as Cyborg has also previously expressed interest in an Amanda Nunes rematch. Additionally, her continued boxing bouts create another possible avenue for a combat sports career outside MMA.

Her next opponent and promotion remain unknown, but Cyborg’s latest decision means her career is still being written.
