Gable Steveson teases Jon Jones UFC return

Jon Jones may not be finished with his UFC career.

Much was made of whether Jones was going to fight or not in the closing stages of his career. Ultimately, he decided to retire, and the sport has since moved on. But that retirement lasted all of 15 months. Rumors are beginning to surface of a potential return for ‘Bones.’ With the heavyweight division filled with uncertainty, now could be the perfect time for another title charge.

Revealing Jon Jones’ urge, training partner and friend Gable Steveson spoke to the media. Steveson told them that the itch is returning for Jones, and his sights could be firmly set on that unclaimed heavyweight crown.

“I called Jon today, and he’s, honestly, he’s honored to have the opportunity to maybe come back. And so you know, he’s always had gold around his waist. It’s cool to have him in my corner. We train every day one-on-one together.”

Jones’ possible comeback comes in light of the news of Tom Aspinall vacating his UFC title. The pair endured a notorious saga that led to Jones retiring and Aspinall wasting months of his career chasing a bout that never transpired.

Despite Jones having public hostility toward Aspinall, Gable Steveson doesn’t share that sentiment. Steveson spoke highly of the Brit, and hopes he heals up well, but knows his absence is a chance for him to close in on a title shot.

“I hope Tom gets well. I hope the eye gets healed up the way it should, and maybe he’ll step in the cage again. I’m not sure. But that’s going to be up to him. I’ve always been a Tom Aspinall fan. I think he’s an athletic gift from God that came down and struck the division. But now it’s time to move on and kind of get the guys with the next gift to step up.”
