Harrison Not A Fan Of ‘Mighty Mouse’s’ Take On Women’s MMA

Kayla Harrison isn’t a big fan of Demetrious Johnson.

It’s not that the current Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women’s Bantamweight champion doesn’t think “Mighty Mouse” wasn’t a talented champion, it’s his most recent take on women’s MMA — her in particular — that has rubbed the champ the wrong way.

During a recent video post, Johnson went on about Harrison challenging Amanda Nunes at UFC 334 later this year, saying the call out never made sense since Harrison’s resume pales in comparison when side by side against Nunes’.

“Kayla Harrison is calling out Amanda Nunes. I think that’s a very, very bad idea,” Johnson said (via MMA Junkie). “Yes, Kayla Harrison is a world champion, but when you look at the roster of what Amanda Nunes fought and what Kayla Harrison fought, there’s no f*cking comparison. There’s not one comparison at all. You had Ronda Rousey, Miesha Tate, Cat Zingano, (Germaine De Randamie), Valentina Shevchenko. Just the talent pool Amanda Nunes has fought in mixed martial arts, blows everything that Kayla Harrison has done in her entire career, just the talent pool.

“Amanda Nunes doesn’t need to come out of retirement. I think the only thing that’s enticing her to come out of retirement is probably how easy the fight might be. They trained together. … She’s got to get Amanda Nunes down. Amanda Nunes is not a very small girl. She’s very big. She’s very strong for her size. I think for Amanda Nunes if she comes back, she is putting her legacy on the line, but it’s not something that I’m jumping out of my seat to see. I’d rather see Amanda Nunes stay retired, and then maybe see Kayla Harrison fight one more time and then retire.”

Not one to sit idle, Harrison fired back.

“I’m just kind of over ‘Mighty’s’ attitude,” Harrison said on “The Ariel Helwani Show.” via MMA Junkie. “First of all, he’s the one that said I shouldn’t fight Amanda, I should retire. This mindset of scarcity is detrimental to the growth of the sport. There’s enough room at the table for all of us to eat, and we don’t have to belittle, or poke fun, or put down anyone else to build our own brand,” she added before piling on after she was also bothered by Johnson’s attitude toward the recent heavily-criticized headlining title fight between Natalia Silva and Wang Cong at UFC 332 in which both he and Israel Adesanya were openly-laughing about it.

“I just don’t believe in that, and especially for a retired fighter. Of course those girls are not stars yet. But you know how you build a star? You fucking put them in the main event and you build them. You have to start somewhere, so to talk shit about them like that, I feel is just unnecessary – super unnecessary.”

While Nunes’ MMA resume is a bit more stacked when compared to Harrison, the former two-time PFL champion is a legit star athlete in her own right. That said, if she can defeat “Lioness” she could have the final laugh against “Might Mouse,” who is widely knows as the greatest Flyweight of all time.
