Israel Adesanya’s UFC future hinges on Shara Magomedov fight

One of the greatest fighters of the modern era has his next fight set.

Former UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya is booked to headline a Fight Night event in Saudi Arabia against dynamic striker and fan favorite Shara Magomedov.

Uncrowned’s Ariel Helwani confirmed the fight during a live stream of “The Ariel Helwani Show” on YouTube.

In terms of competition level, this is a massive step down for Adesanya. Shara Bullet doesn’t have any really good wins.

All of Shara’s wins are against older fighters past their prime or prospects matched with him to make him look good.

Shara’s last fight was a unanimous-decision win over Michel Pereira, who has since lost four of his last five fights. Before that, Shara defeated Marc-Andre Barriault, who has also now lost four of his last five fights.

Now fighting for the second time in 2026, Israel Adesanya has his best chance in years to win. Shara isn’t going to engage in any grappling. While Shara does have impressive footwork and versatility as a striker, Adesanya built a career off of those skills.

Adesanya has lost four straight, but unlike Shara’s other opponents, he’s lost to the best. With losses to Sean Strickland, Dricus Du Plessis, Nassourdine Imavov, and Joe Pyfer, Adesanya is clearly no longer amongst the elite at 185 pounds.

That said, neither is Shara Magomedov, so this fight will answer one big question.

Israel Adesanya is fighting to prove he’s still UFC caliber

A loss for Adesanya here won’t come with the excuse that he got beat by one of the best in the world. Shara Bullet is not that; he’s fun, but he’s not elite.

This would be a fifth loss in a row. At 37, why would Adesanya keep going, especially if each loss makes the next fights less significant?

The legacy is set; Adesanya is the second-best middleweight of all time and probably one of the top-20 MMA fighters ever.

Obviously, Adesanya will always have a competitive spirit. However, there comes a point where the sport retires the fighter rather than the fighter retiring from the sport.

There have been many fighters who once contended but then went on long losing streaks. Fighters like Tony Ferguson, Tai Tuivasa, and even legends like Anderson Silva have gone through this. They all fought as shells of themselves towards the end of their careers.

Adesanya has done extremely well outside the cage, building a YouTube presence and securing major sponsorships. If he loses for a fifth time in a row, he still has many avenues to success outside the cage.
