Why one UFC analyst doesnt care for Justin Gaethje vs. Alexander Volkanovski
Michael Bisping says a superfight between Justin Gaethje and Alexander Volkanovski would put two divisions in limbo.
After finishing Movsar Evloev to retain his featherweight title in Saturday's UFC 333 main event in Abu Dhabi, Volkanovski (29-4 MMA, 16-3 UFC) continued to set his sights on a lightweight title fight against Gaethje (28-5 MMA, 11-5 UFC). He even said he's willing to fight Arman Tsarukyan if Gaethje opts to retire.
While Bisping won't be one to deny Volkanovski's wishes, he's more concerned about lightweight being held up.
"In the lightweight division, Justin Gaethje has got a clear-cut No. 1 contender in Arman Tsarukyan," Bisping said on his "Believe You Me Podcast." "There's also Charles Oliveira that he's lost to that's fighting Diego Lopes. There's Max Holloway that he's lost to. Listen, the man's a legend – awesome career. But he's got work to do in the lightweight division. Volkanovski, does he deserve a third shot? I'm not saying he does or he doesn't, but he's already had two shots at becoming a lightweight champ, and to be honest, that's one-way legacy for Volkanovski.
"Again, I freaking love Volk. I think he's the man, and I support him doing whatever the hell he wants to do. If he made that decision, great. I'm just saying, if I were Justin Gaethje sitting here right now, I'd be like, well, I'm going to take a chance, I'm going to take a guy that's coming up a weight class, so it's win-win for him regardless. And if he was to lose, it's not the best look and then he loses his belt and then what? Retires. … I would understand if Justin Gaethje was hesitant to want to do that."
Volkanovski is also willing to stick around at featherweight. He sees Aljamain Sterling, who meets Kevin Vallejos at UFC Fight Night 294 on Nov. 21 in Qatar, as the most worthy contender.
